Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening Can Brighter Your Smile and Your Day

Whiter, brighter teeth help boost self-confidence and encourage you to smile more. While numerous teeth whitening pastes, rinses and whitening strips can be bought at the store and applied at home, the professional teeth whitening treatment options available at Serene Dental Care are the best choice for long-lasting, dramatic results.

The most effective teeth whitening procedure for one person may not be the same for another. According to the American Dental Association, you should have a dental exam before beginning any teeth whitening, including at-home treatments.

Discussing what will work best for you with your dentist is the first step to a great smile.

Teeth Whitening Options

We have different teeth whitening options available. The most common in-office treatments generally involve bleaching the teeth with a chemical like sodium peroxide, then using a special type of light to accelerate the process. The entire treatment will take multiple visits to complete, but very noticeable results can usually be seen after the first appointment.

Another popular method involves a customized teeth whitening tray. The dentist takes a mold of your teeth at the office and sends it to a laboratory, which creates a tray designed specifically for your teeth. These work better than store-bought teeth whitening trays as they can maximize the contact between your teeth and the whitening agent applied to tray.

Since both of these procedures use chemical bleaching agents to change the color of teeth, common side effects include increased tooth sensitivity and minor gum irritation. In general, slowing down or pausing the treatment, as well as using toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth, can alleviate side effects or pausing the treatment.

In some cases, such as teeth stained brown or a grayish color, teeth whitening will not be as effective as with yellow teeth. In these cases, other options are available to help you get a whiter smile:

  • Dental Veneers: Thin porcelain shells that are installed over tooth enamel and look like natural teeth. Their color can be changed to match the color of other teeth, or to create a whiter exterior than before.
  • Bonding: Rather than a porcelain shell, bonding is when a dentist applies a composite resin to the outside of the tooth.
  • Dental Crowns: While not a common method of whitening teeth, crowns, which are basically artificial teeth, can be made whiter than the original tooth they replace.

Why Don’t Teeth Stay White on Their Own?

Regular brushing and flossing are the easiest way to help prevent yellowing. Teeth change color as the outer enamel layer becomes stained. The reasons for this vary, but the most common is simply neglecting to brush and floss properly. As plaque builds up on and between the teeth, it can cause yellowing as well as more serious problems, such as cavities and gingivitis.

Teeth may lose their luster for many different reasons; however, the most common causes include the yellowing of teeth as we grow older as well as drinking a lot of staining or stain-encouraging beverages, like red and white wine, coffee, tea and soda, including clear sodas like Sprite.

Smoking and other tobacco products that contain tar are also very bad for the color of your teeth.
